Plate Heat Exchanger Maintenance Guide

Plate heat exchangers are efficient and compact, but they require specific maintenance practices. This guide covers cleaning, gasket replacement, reassembly, and the maintenance schedule that keeps your PHE running efficiently.

Daily Checks

  • Check for external leaks at the plate edges and frame connections
  • Record inlet and outlet temperatures on both sides — compare against design
  • Check for unusual vibration or noise
  • Verify flow rates are within the design range
  • Check pressure gauges — a rising pressure drop indicates fouling

Monthly Maintenance

  • Calculate the heat transfer coefficient (U-value) and compare to baseline — if it's dropped below 70% of clean value, schedule cleaning
  • Inspect the frame and tie bolts for corrosion and tightness
  • Check the bolt torque — re-tighten if loosened by thermal cycling
  • Inspect external paint/coating for corrosion
  • Clean or replace strainers on both inlet sides

Annual Maintenance

  1. Open the unit: Isolate, drain, and loosen the tie bolts. Remove the pressure plate.
  2. Remove and inspect plates: Slide each plate off the guide bar. Inspect for corrosion, cracks, pinholes (use dye penetrant), and gasket condition.
  3. Clean the plates: Use chemical cleaning (circulate a cleaning solution — mild acid for scale, alkali for organics) or mechanical cleaning (soft brushes — never use wire brushes or metal scrapers that will scratch the plate surface).
  4. Replace all gaskets: Remove old gaskets, clean the gasket grooves, and bond new gaskets using the manufacturer's adhesive. Allow the adhesive to cure before reassembly.
  5. Reassemble: Stack the plates in the correct order and orientation (check the plate arrangement diagram). Slide them onto the guide bars.
  6. Tighten: Compress the plate pack to the specified dimension (measured between the fixed frame and the pressure plate). Tighten bolts evenly in a crisscross pattern.
  7. Pressure test: Hydrostatic test at 1.5× design pressure on each side separately.
  8. Record: Log the maintenance, including the number of plates, gasket type, and tightening dimension.

Gasket Replacement Guidelines

  • Replace all gaskets at the same time — never mix old and new gaskets
  • Use gaskets of the correct material for the fluid and temperature (NBR for water/oil, EPDM for steam/food, Viton for chemicals)
  • Check the gasket groove is clean — old adhesive residue must be removed
  • Allow adhesive to cure for the recommended time (usually 24 hours) before reassembly
  • Replace gaskets every 2–3 years as preventive maintenance, even if they appear intact
