MTBF Explained: Mean Time Between Failures
MTBF is the most widely used reliability metric. Learn how to calculate MTBF, what it tells you about your equipment, how to use it to improve maintenance, and common mistakes to avoid.
What is MTBF?
Mean Time Between Failures (MTBF) is the average operating time between consecutive failures of a piece of equipment. It's a measure of reliability — a higher MTBF means the equipment fails less frequently. MTBF is calculated by dividing the total operating time by the number of failures in that period.
How to Calculate MTBF
Example: A pump operates for 8,000 hours in a year and fails 4 times:
This means that, on average, the pump runs for 2,000 hours between failures. Whether that's good or bad depends on the equipment type and the plant's expectations.

How to Use MTBF
- Trend MTBF over time — an increasing trend means reliability is improving; decreasing means it's getting worse.
- Compare MTBF across similar equipment — if one pump has an MTBF of 5,000 hours and another identical pump has 15,000, investigate the difference (operating conditions, installation, maintenance).
- Set improvement targets — aim to increase MTBF by 10–20% per year through better maintenance, condition monitoring, and root cause analysis.
- Justify improvement projects — if a pump's MTBF is 2,000 hours and the industry benchmark is 10,000, the gap justifies investment in better maintenance or equipment upgrade.
- Calculate spare parts requirements — if MTBF is 5,000 hours and you have 5 identical pumps, you'll need approximately 8.8 spare kits per year.
Common MTBF Mistakes
- ✗Including planned maintenance downtime in the calculation — MTBF measures operating time between failures, not total uptime.
- ✗Counting the same failure mode multiple times — if a bearing fails and you replace it with another that also fails, that's two failures. But if the root cause is misalignment, the MTBF will stay low until you fix the alignment.
- ✗Using MTBF for non-repairable items — MTBF is for repairable systems. For non-repairable items (like bearings, seals), use MTTF (Mean Time To Failure).
- ✗Comparing MTBF across different equipment types — a 5,000-hour MTBF is good for a compressor but terrible for a motor.
- ✗Ignoring the operating context — a pump running on clean water will have a much higher MTBF than the same pump on abrasive slurry. Compare like with like.
