What ISO 9001 Is

ISO 9001 is the international standard for quality management systems (QMS). It provides a framework for organisations to consistently deliver products and services that meet customer and regulatory requirements. While often associated with manufacturing, ISO 9001 applies equally to maintenance operations — especially in regulated industries.

The standard follows a process-based approach: define your processes, control them, measure performance, and continuously improve.

How It Applies to Maintenance

  • Documented procedures: Maintenance procedures (PMs, work order processes, inspection procedures) must be documented, controlled, and followed.
  • Competence: Maintenance personnel must be competent — training, qualifications, and certifications must be maintained.
  • Calibration: Measuring and test equipment (calipers, torque wrenches, instruments) must be calibrated to traceable standards.
  • Nonconformity management: When maintenance doesn't meet the standard (e.g., a repair fails), the nonconformity must be investigated and corrective action taken.
  • Records: Maintenance records, inspection reports, and calibration certificates must be maintained and retrievable.
  • Continuous improvement: Maintenance performance is measured and improved over time — using KPIs, root cause analysis, and corrective actions.

Benefits for Maintenance

ISO 9001 certification in maintenance brings:

Consistent maintenance quality — everyone follows the same documented procedures.

Traceability — every maintenance action is recorded and retrievable.

Reduced rework — because procedures are documented and training is verified.

Customer/regulator confidence — ISO 9001 certification demonstrates commitment to quality.

How CHI can help

Ask CHI about ISO 9001 quality management principles and how to apply them to your maintenance operations. The CHI assistant can explain what each standard covers, why it matters for your plant, and how to ensure compliance with key requirements.
