Globe Valve vs Gate Valve: Which to Use?

Globe valves and gate valves serve different purposes. This guide compares the two — design, application, flow characteristics, and when to use each type.

Design Differences

The fundamental difference is in how they regulate flow:

  • Gate valve: A flat gate (wedge) lifts vertically out of the flow path. When fully open, the gate is completely out of the flow, giving a straight-through bore with minimal pressure drop. Designed for on/off service — not throttling.
  • Globe valve: A disc moves perpendicular to the seat, changing the gap between disc and seat to regulate flow. The flow path is S-shaped (changes direction twice), which creates higher pressure drop but excellent throttling control.

When to Use a Gate Valve

  • Isolation — when you need a tight shutoff with minimal pressure drop
  • Large pipe sizes (above 200mm) — gate valves are more economical at large sizes
  • Slurry and dirty fluids — the straight-through bore doesn't trap solids
  • Low-frequency operation — gate valves are not designed for frequent cycling
  • When the valve is either fully open or fully closed — never use a gate valve for throttling

When to Use a Globe Valve

  • Throttling — when you need to regulate flow, not just isolate
  • Control applications — globe valves are the standard for manual and automatic flow control
  • When pressure drop is acceptable in exchange for control quality
  • High-temperature or high-pressure steam — globe valves handle these well
  • When you need good shutoff AND throttling in the same valve
  • Cooling water lines, feedwater control, blowdown control, sampling lines

Critical Rule

Never use a gate valve for throttling. When a gate valve is partially open, the high-velocity flow between the gate and seat causes wire-drawing (erosion) that destroys the seat within hours. Gate valves are fully open or fully closed — nothing in between.
