Ball Valve vs Butterfly Valve: Comparison Guide
Ball valves and butterfly valves are both quarter-turn valves used for isolation, but they have very different characteristics. This guide compares them across performance, cost, size, and application.

Design Overview
- Ball valve: A spherical ball with a bore (hole) through the centre rotates 90° to open or close. When the bore aligns with the pipe, the valve is fully open. When rotated 90°, the solid part of the ball blocks the flow. The ball seals against PTFE (Teflon) or elastomer seats.
- Butterfly valve: A circular disc on a shaft rotates 90° to open or close. When the disc is parallel to the flow, the valve is open. When perpendicular, the disc blocks the flow. The disc seals against an elastomer liner in the body.

When to Use a Ball Valve
- When bubble-tight shutoff is required (hazardous, toxic, or high-purity applications)
- Small to medium pipe sizes (up to 200mm) where the cost is competitive
- When low pressure drop is critical (full-bore ball valves have minimal restriction)
- Slurry and dirty fluid service (the full bore doesn't trap solids)
- High-pressure applications (ball valves handle pressure better than butterfly valves)
- When the valve will be infrequently operated (ball valves seal well even after long periods of inactivity)
When to Use a Butterfly Valve
- Large pipe sizes (above 200mm) where ball valves are prohibitively expensive
- Cooling water systems, fire water systems, and low-pressure distribution mains
- When space is limited — butterfly valves have the shortest face-to-face dimension of any valve type
- When weight is a concern (large ball valves are very heavy)
- Applications where some throttling is needed (butterfly valves can throttle between 20–80% open)
- HVAC systems, water treatment, and large-diameter isolation
Throttling Limitation
While butterfly valves can throttle better than ball valves, neither is ideal for precision flow control. For modulating control, use a globe valve or a characterised ball valve (V-port or segmented ball) designed specifically for throttling.
