What AS/NZS 3000 Covers

AS/NZS 3000, commonly known as the 'Wiring Rules', is the fundamental standard for electrical installations in Australia and New Zealand. It specifies requirements for the design, construction, and verification of low-voltage electrical installations (up to 1000V AC).

It covers everything from domestic wiring to industrial installations — circuit design, cable selection, earthing, protection devices, switchboard construction, and safety requirements.

Key Requirements

  • Cable selection: Cables must be sized based on current-carrying capacity, voltage drop, and short-circuit temperature — with derating for grouping, ambient temperature, and installation method.
  • Earthing: Every installation must have a protective earthing system that ensures fault currents are cleared quickly by protective devices.
  • Circuit protection: Each circuit must be protected by a circuit breaker or fuse rated to protect the cable and disconnect fault currents.
  • RCDs: Residual current devices (RCDs) are required on most circuits to protect against electric shock — they trip within 30ms if earth leakage exceeds 30mA.
  • Switchboards: Switchboards must be constructed with adequate clearance, ventilation, and protection against contact with live parts.

Why It Matters

Electrical installations that comply with AS/NZS 3000 are safe, reliable, and legal. Non-compliant installations risk electric shock, fire, and equipment damage. The standard is referenced by building codes and state electricity safety regulations — compliance is mandatory, not optional.

For maintenance engineers, understanding AS/NZS 3000 helps ensure that electrical modifications and additions meet the standard — protecting both the plant and the personnel who work on the electrical system.

This article explains what AS/NZS 3000 covers. It does not reproduce the standard. Always consult the published standard and a licensed electrician for specific requirements.

How CHI can help

Ask CHI about AS/NZS 3000 wiring rules and how they apply to your electrical installations. The CHI assistant can explain what each standard covers, why it matters for your plant, and how to ensure compliance with key requirements.
