Air Dryer Maintenance Guide
Air dryers remove moisture from compressed air to prevent corrosion and freezing. This guide covers the maintenance of refrigerated and desiccant dryers — the two most common types.

Types of Air Dryers
- Refrigerated dryer: Cools the compressed air to 2–4°C, condensing moisture which is then drained. Most common for general industrial applications. Dew point: 2–4°C.
- Desiccant dryer: Passes air through a bed of desiccant (silica gel, activated alumina) that adsorbs moisture. Two towers alternate — one drying, one regenerating. For applications requiring very dry air (dew point: −40°C to −70°C).
- Membrane dryer: Uses a semi-permeable membrane to remove water vapour. Compact and maintenance-free, but limited capacity. For point-of-use applications.
Refrigerated Dryer Maintenance
- Clean the condenser coil monthly — a dirty coil reduces cooling capacity and increases energy consumption. Use compressed air or low-pressure water.
- Check the condensate drain daily — verify it's discharging water. A blocked drain floods the dryer and passes moisture downstream.
- Check the dew point indicator weekly — should read 2–4°C. If higher, the dryer isn't performing. Check refrigerant level, condenser cleanliness, and ambient temperature.
- Check refrigerant pressure annually — low pressure indicates a refrigerant leak. Call a qualified technician to repair and recharge.
- Inspect the hot gas bypass valve — ensures stable operation at low loads. If the dryer ices up at low flow, the bypass valve may be faulty.
- Replace the air filter (if fitted) every 6 months.
- Verify the ambient temperature is below 40°C — refrigerated dryers can't operate effectively in hot environments.
Desiccant Dryer Maintenance
- Replace the desiccant every 2–3 years — desiccant degrades over time, losing adsorption capacity. Oil contamination accelerates degradation. Replace immediately if oiled.
- Check the purge flow rate monthly — excessive purge wastes compressed air; insufficient purge leaves moisture in the desiccant. Verify against the manufacturer's specification.
- Inspect and clean the switching valves — these valves alternate between towers. A leaking valve allows wet air to bypass the drying tower. Clean or replace annually.
- Check the dew point indicator weekly — should read −40°C (or the design dew point). A rising dew point indicates desiccant degradation or valve failure.
- Check the muffler/silencer — a blocked muffler restricts purge flow and prevents proper regeneration. Clean or replace.
- Inspect the heater (for heated regeneration types) — verify the heater is operating and the temperature is correct. A failed heater prevents proper desiccant regeneration.
- Check the timer/controller — verify the tower switching is occurring at the correct interval (typically 5–10 minutes per tower).
- Install an oil-removing filter upstream — oil contaminates the desiccant and destroys its effectiveness. Replace the coalescing filter element every 6–12 months.

Important
A failing air dryer allows moisture into the compressed air system, causing corrosion in piping, damage to pneumatic equipment, and frozen lines in cold weather. Monitor the dew point continuously and address any deterioration promptly.
