Checklist
Air Compressor Maintenance Checklist
An air compressor maintenance checklist covering daily, weekly, and monthly tasks for reciprocating and rotary screw compressors.
4 min readUpdated July 2026
Daily Checks
- Check oil level: Verify compressor oil level is at the correct mark. Top up if needed with the correct oil.
- Drain receiver: Open the drain valve on the air receiver to discharge condensate. Close when only air escapes.
- Check for leaks: Listen for air leaks around fittings, valves, and hoses. Repair promptly.
- Check discharge temperature: Verify discharge air temperature is within normal range (typically below 40°C after cooler).
- Check operating pressure: Verify compressor is cycling normally and maintaining system pressure.
- Check for unusual noise: Listen for knocking, grinding, or unusual sounds from the compressor.
Weekly Checks
- Inspect air intake filter: Check the intake filter condition. Clean or replace if dirty — a clogged filter wastes energy.
- Check cooler: Inspect the intercooler and aftercooler for fouling. Clean if discharge temperature has increased.
- Drain condensate traps: Verify automatic condensate drains are working. Manually drain if needed.
- Check belts (reciprocating): Inspect V-belts for tension and condition. Replace if cracked or stretched.
- Inspect valves (reciprocating): Listen for valve chatter — excessive noise indicates worn or leaking valves.
Monthly Checks
- Change oil filter: Replace the oil filter per the manufacturer's schedule.
- Sample oil: Take an oil sample for analysis — check viscosity, wear metals, water, and acidity.
- Check safety valve: Gently lift the safety relief valve test lever to verify it moves freely.
- Check motor: Check motor current, temperature, and cooling fan. Clean dust from the motor.
- Inspect cooler fins: Clean dust and debris from cooler fins with compressed air.
- Leak survey: Conduct an ultrasonic leak survey of the compressed air distribution system. Tag and repair leaks.
- Check unloader valve: Verify the unloader valve operates correctly when the compressor stops.
How CHI can help
Ask CHI about air compressor maintenance and to help diagnose performance issues. The CHI assistant can help you create custom checklists for your specific equipment, explain each inspection point, and flag items that need attention based on your equipment's condition.
